<![CDATA[POOL & PATIO CENTER - Our Blog]]>Sun, 07 Apr 2024 01:06:26 -0400Weebly<![CDATA[How Stale is Your Chlorine?]]>Wed, 15 Jun 2022 20:24:07 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/how-stale-is-your-chlorineDoes Your Chlorine Jug Have a Yellow Cap?

Liquid chlorine may have a label that says it was packaged at 12.5%, but what has it degraded down to by the time it gets to you? Per major liquid chlorine packagers: “This product degrades with age”.
So…we ask you… how stale is your chlorine?
Sodium hypochlorite, liquid chlorine, is a very popular method of sanitizing recreational water like swimming pools. While it is the same chemical compound as common household bleach, swimming pool chlorine is initially packaged around twice the strength of common household bleach. While one of the most popular and common methods of sanitizing and shocking your pool, even at its strongest, liquid chlorine is the weakest form of chlorine sanitizer you can use in a swimming pool. To make it worse, liquid chlorine degrades with age, so make sure you are getting the freshest chlorine possible from the nearest local packager.

When choosing to purchase liquid chlorine, do your research on how far and long of a commute that container has had to make from its packager to you. There are packagers that are in other regions of the country which ship their chlorine to distribution centers first, which then redirect them to local dealers who finally have it in stock for you to purchase. As one example, Buckman’s packages liquid chlorine near Philadelphia, transports to distributors outside of Hartford and Boston which then finally ship to local dealers. How long has this chlorine been sitting on loading docks, on transport trucks, on more loading docks and storage and finally then delivered locally? And after all this time, how much potency is really left?

Is that chlorine so much cheaper at the national chain? Regional discount store? Even another specialty store? How come?

Where was it packaged and how long has it been degrading and decaying before it got on that shelf?
Read the label and know where your chlorine is packaged! We choose to purchase our liquid chlorine from a much more local packager within Rhode Island. Accu-Care Supply, which packages and ship their chlorine directly to us, allows us to provide the strongest, freshest liquid chlorine available!

<![CDATA[All Pool Shocks are NOT Created Equal!]]>Tue, 03 May 2022 00:08:41 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/all-pool-shocks-are-not-created-equalWould you like to diminish the effect of sanitizer (chlorine) in your pool, or render it almost useless at doing its job to keep your pool clean? Unfortunately, this is where many people will be headed if they don’t pay attention to the labels and types of pool shock that will be commonly available this year!

There’s no question that over the COVID years, supply chains for virtually every industry were disrupted, and the pool and spa industry were one for sure when factoring in many simultaneous disturbances in the same timeframe. Unfortunately, the shortages for multiple forms of pool sanitizers--like chlorine--were dramatically affected; and as we gear up for a new 2022 pool season, new items are being added to that list, specifically granular calcium hypochlorite (Cal-Hypo), arguably one of the best and most popular forms of pool shock available.

“Cal-Hypo” shock is packaged under MANY labels and the benefits of this formula of shock are it’s very fast acting, and it slightly raises the calcium levels of the pool water – which has several benefits and helps prolong the life your pool surface and equipment. It’s also the shock preferred to be paired with one of the most popular forms of chlorine sanitizer, 3” tabs (Trichlor), which separately have gone through their own shortages over the past year. The primary reason it is the perfect pairing is because Cal-Hypo shock is NOT STABILIZED, while Trichlor tabs are. Ideally, if your primary form of sanitizer is stabilized chlorine tabs, you should NOT use a stabilized form of shock. If stabilized shock is paired with a stabilized primary chlorine, your stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid) can increase rapidly past the recommended range.

Cyanuric Acid, labeled as various names such as chlorine stabilizer or pool water conditioner, is very good for your pool water--to a point. It acts as “sunscreen” for chlorine, preventing it from degrading and “burning off” in the sun. Many popular forms of pool chlorine have stabilizer inherently built into them, so they are more stable and efficient at sanitizing your pool water. Unfortunately, if the stabilizer level in the water exceeds recommended levels, it has very negative effects on pool water.

As the stabilizer level increases, the effectiveness of chlorine’s ability to sanitize the water decreases, so ultimately the higher the stabilizer level is, the MORE chlorine your pool requires to be properly sanitized. Pools that are over-stabilized may require two to three times the recommended sanitizer (chlorine) level than normal! With recent costs of chlorine, who wants that?

One of the easiest ways to prevent over-stabilization is to make sure you pair a non-stabilized shock (such as Cal-Hypo) with your stabilized sanitizer (such as tabs). Unfortunately, with upcoming shortages now predicted in the supply chain for Cal-Hypo, we’re seeing STABILIZED GRANULAR SHOCK flood the market. This stabilized granular shock is commonly referred to as Dichlor, and pairing Dichlor shock with Trichlor tabs is a recipe for the fast-track to overstabilization. Dichlor shock has its use, and has some benefits when used in specific instances; however, it should NEVER be used in large amounts or routinely paired with Trichlor tabs. Always make sure you are using Cal-Hypo shock to open your pool, to clear up a “swamp” or dirty pool, or for routine shocking when paired with chlorine tab usage. Many times, Dichlor shock is masked and marketed as “multipurpose”, all-in-one, quick-swim or “smarter” types of shocks. Unfortunately, homeowners need to be aware--now more than ever with predicted Cal-Hypo shortages, Thankfully, Pool & Patio Center has planned for such and will have a tremendous supply of the right shock for your pool!

<![CDATA[Why You Should Never Buy a Hot Tub at an Expo]]>Thu, 03 Oct 2019 20:43:35 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/why-you-should-never-buy-a-hot-tub-at-an-expoYou’ll hear the ads, you’ll see the social media posts, and there’ll be that familiar man’s low voice of urgency on the radio or local TV station… “HURRY HURRY HURRY! Don’t miss OOOOUUUT! This weekend ONLY!” But let’s be honest here, is a pop-up hot tub expo really the best place to buy a hot tub? Well, here’s four reasons we don’t think so:

Only ONE Company Will Be There.

Sure, you’ll hear the advertisement that there will be all major brands on display, dozens of tubs all competing for your business, so you get the best deal! Well, that will NOT be the case if you show up. Just as a note, some of the brands you WILL NOT see at any pop-up expo… Bullfrog Spas, Hot Spring, Jacuzzi, American Whirlpool, Dimension One, Sundance, or Vita… However, ALL these major quality brands CAN be found at your local brick and mortar dealers. If you want to browse a true selection of great quality hot tubs, visit your local dealers.

Local Service & Representation

The hot tub and spa industry’s best brands will ALWAYS and ONLY be sold by LOCAL dealers and brick and mortar stores. Travelling sales or pop-up shows are like the here-today gone-tomorrow Halloween shops and the Fourth of July firework tents. They “pop-up” in regions BECAUSE they don’t have local representation or a dealer to support them. Once a pop-up event is over, the sale team has moved on to a different city in a different region, their focus throughout the entire process is NOT you -- the customer -- Their focus is to sell as many as they can, get them dropped and delivered as quick as they can and move on to the next city.

They Gave Me a GREAT Deal at the Hot Tub Expo!

But did they really? Travelling pop-up expos live and die by their sales team. These professionals must rely on high pressure tactics, the illusion of a “great deal”, and are highly trained to sell ON THE SPOT. However, in many cases, you can find a much better “deal” at a local brick and mortar store. Pop-up expos come with a HUGE overhead for the cost of their floor space in the convention center, fair grounds or show event. They must recoup tens of THOUSANDS of dollars for booth space the short 3-4 days they’re there. You can be assured, it’s their JOB to make it sound like you got one GREAT deal, but it is NOT the best deal you can find. See our previous post regarding some of the tactics and claims that are used: are-you-buying-a-hot-tub-from-a-dealeror-the-electric-company.html

Is a pop-up show the best place to get a QUALITY tub?

You can’t TEST the spas at an expo; however, you can make appointments to do so at your local brick and mortar showroom. Would you buy a car on the spot, without test driving it? There are numerous factors that go into the overall quality of construction of a hot tub, many are beneath the skin of the fancy shell with flashing color LED lights that you see. Take the time to educate yourself on how tubs are built as the cost of ownership can fluctuate dramatically between the major high-end brands and some of the pop-up shows that offer discount brands or tubs sold from warehouses. Again, see one of our previous posts that goes further into the differences in quality and cost of ownership of the different types of spas: are-you-buying-a-hot-tub-from-a-dealeror-the-electric-company.html

Are you still going to the pop-up expo? Then try and get some answers to these questions while you’re there:

 • Do you have energy costs for your hot tub used in OUR region for REAL usage, FOUR-to-FIVE times a week for 30 minutes per soak?
 • Do you have a local showroom I can do a test soak at prior to making a decision?
 • What company is responsible for service on my purchase, and it is a third party?
 • Can you show or provide me with a physical copy of the warranty prior to purchase?
 • What is your cancellation policy and how do I get a refund if I choose to?

<![CDATA[10 Pool Closing Steps that Make Pool Opening a Breeze]]>Tue, 17 Sep 2019 14:39:02 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/10-pool-closing-steps-that-make-pool-opening-a-breeze
 1. BALANCE water. Improper water chemistry can STAIN, WRINKLE or CORRODE your pool surfaces.
 2. CLEAN and VACUUM thoroughly to avoid stubborn organic stains.
 3. CLEAR your pool water. Add shock, winter NON-METALLIC algaecide, stain/scale control and clarifier. Pools DON'T open clearer or cleaner than how they were closed!
 4. DRAIN pools down to the proper level based on your pool and cover style.
 5. PLUG return jets. NEVER plug a skimmer on an above-ground pool.
 6. PILLOWS are pillows--NOT beach balls! Only inflate 1/2 to 3/4 to absorb ice expansion to protect your pool liner and wall.
 7. MESH COVER USERS: Add a NON-METALLIC algaecide BEFORE ice freezes (around Thanksgiving) and AFTER ice thaws (around Easter) to hinder algae growth.
 8. REMOVE debris and water from cover BEFORE water freezes. Once water freezes, DON'T TOUCH YOUR POOL. Start over when ice THAWS.
 9. ABOVE-GROUND POOLS: Take all filter system components INSIDE for the winter.
 10. If all else fails, have Pool & Patio Center's certified and nationally-trained staff close your pool!

<![CDATA[The Best Hot Tub Jets | Bullfrog Spas]]>Fri, 06 Sep 2019 18:12:19 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/the-best-hot-tub-jets-bullfrog-spas

The Best Hot Tub Jets

One of the best things about having a hot tub is the therapy it can provide for your aching muscles. In addition to the overall soothing effect of a great spa, hot tub jets can be specially designed to massage trouble areas, from the neck and shoulders down to the calves and feet. To get the most out of your spa, it helps to know what are the best hot tub jets. This guide will help you learn more about hot tub jets and what will work best for you.

How Do Hot Tub Jets Work?

First off, knowing how hot tub jets work can help you know what to look for when ordering your hot tub. The jets have water piped to them through the hot tub’s plumbing. The water is then infused with air to get the right mix of the two. The pipes then narrow to increase the pressure. The air-filled water exits the pipes through a jet nozzle into the hot tub’s reservoir of soothing hot water.

Types of Hot Tub Jets

Picture
There is a surprising variety of hot tub jets available. They offer different sizes, pressure, pulsing actions, and locations. Each is designed to sooth in a unique way.

Rotating single-pulse jets offer a slow and steady pulse designed to massage a single spot, like shoulder knots. Meanwhile, rapid double pulse jets work two close areas, like the muscles along the sides of the spine.

Shower jets use a series of smaller jets that work over a large area for a relaxing effect. They can gently work the entire back. Kneading oscillator jets take it a step further by moving to deeply work a large area like the lower back.

To really work the trouble areas, powerful deep relief jets provide intense tissue massage. They are the most powerful type of hot tub jets. For a balance between powerful deep tissue and relaxation, relaxing firm relief jets are a good option.

Target therapy jets are another option. They are placed in strategic spots to reach key areas from the shoulders to the calves. There are also mini target therapy jets for smaller muscles in the hands and forearms. You can also target both feet with dual pulse foot therapy jets.

All-in-One JetPaks

To get the best of all these worlds, you can opt for a built-in arrangement of jets like Bullfrog Spas JetPaks. They can be placed in the seat, and the pressure and configuration customized to hit all the right spots for the perfect hot tub massage therapy.

What Hot Tub Has the Most Jets?

The hot tub with the most jets actually depends on you! You can equip your hot tub with multiple JetPaks to get hundreds of jets in your tub. The ideal number of jets is probably under a hundred, though. Just work with your hot tub dealer to get the right configuration for you.

What are the Most Powerful Hot Tub Jets?

The most powerful hot tub jets largely depend on the design of the hot tub and its jets. To get the most powerful jets, you need the best design. This includes using less piping so the water doesn’t have to travel as far, getting the right mixture of air and water, and having quality narrow openings. A variety of jets helps with power as does having strong pumps with extra horsepower.

Getting the best hot tub for you involves getting the hot tub accessories that meet your unique needs. Talk with your local hot tub dealer to find the right options for the spa you have always wanted!

<![CDATA[Confessions of a Gas Grill Guy]]>Tue, 20 Aug 2019 22:44:15 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/confessions-of-a-gas-grill-guyCharcoal makes a big mess! Who has time for that?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone on my anti-charcoal rant. For more than 20 years I defended my decision to gas grill and--truthfully—I can’t believe how wrong I was.

Early this summer, I was researching smokers and wasn’t overly impressed with some of the stand-alone smoker designs. As I looked at my aging 15-year old gas grill, my search broadened out to something that could not only just smoke but also grill. The Primo Ceramic Grill does both and changed my thinking big time!

My prior experience with charcoal was limited to a couple of random tailgate events—fiascos that usually ended with us leaving the little grill behind in the parking lot. I watched a few quick Primo University YouTube tutorials before I started and I must say, I was surprised. I used Rockwood Lump Charcoal and some of their wood chips to add additional flavor; my wife and I were amazed at how moist and flavorful the food was! Everything I threw at the Primo turned out better than anything I’ve done on my gas grill--thick cut pork chops, burgers, lamb chops, racks of ribs, whole chickens…the list could go on and the results were the same. Truly, delicious is in the details! I was definitely now a ‘Charcoal Enthusiast’!

Lighting the Primo was much easier than I imagined. Primo has these little natural quick light sticks that work like large matches: stick one or two of those in the pile of lump charcoal, leave the bottom vent and lid wide open for 5-10 minutes and away it goes. There real wasn’t much of an adjustment other than reverse my order of preparation. Instead of prepping before lighting the grill, I light the Primo first. Once I’ve seasoned my burgers and washed and chopped the last pepper, my Primo was ready and time wasn’t an issue at all.

Lump charcoal is NOT the bag of manufactured compressed “briquettes” we think of when someone says charcoal. Lump charcoal is naturally made real hard wood, that burns clean, long and adds a ton of flavor to your food. Also, since you NEVER use lighter fluid, you never get the chemical-like smell or flavor. In my opinion, the best part of lump charcoal is you can snuff out your fire in the Primo and the next time you go to cook again, you can light it AGAIN! My Primo Ceramic Grill came with a little ash tool that, after a few cooks, I just scrape out the ash into a trash pail and reload up the firebox with new lump charcoal--for sure, nothing I would consider a mess.

If you’re looking for a new grill or smoker and are hesitant about charcoal or ceramic grills, stop into our showroom and we’re more than happy to show you how easy, flavorful, convenient, and versatile a Primo Ceramic Grill can be. It doesn’t matter if you’re grilling, roasting, baking, searing or smoking…these grills can do it all!

<![CDATA[Uncovering Your Above-Ground Pool... Is It Really a Leak, or Just Water Displacement?]]>Sun, 19 May 2019 13:41:43 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/uncovering-your-above-ground-pool-is-it-really-a-leak-or-just-water-displacementPicture
Water displacement is a very common occurrence and common cause of water loss in an above-ground pool during the winter months while the pools are out of sight, out of mind, and not being monitored. Heavy weight accumulating on top of the winter cover via rain, leaves, debris, snow and ice commonly push the pool cover down and—therefore--displacing the pool water up and out of the pool. We’ve seen pools get displaced down to 1’ of water! It’s like sticking your fist in a cup full of water!

It’s easy to jump to the conclusion there’s a leak, but I tend to be a bit more cautious when we just uncover the pools early in the spring. Before paying for a scuba diver or leak detection services, if you want to be sure, all you have to do is slowly fill the pool up by 6-8”, then let it sit for a day; do this when there is no forecast for rain. You can monitor the water level with a piece of painter’s tape on the liner. If after a day’s time the pool doesn’t substantially drop (more than ¼” is a leak, up to ¼” could be evaporation--depending on the weather), fill up another 6-8” and wait another day. If you get to the point the pool is full and holding, just open it up and swim! If at any point in time you add some water to the pool and it does drop, then we can discuss leak detection or patch options.

<![CDATA[6 Ways Hot Tubs Can Improve Your Health]]>Wed, 27 Feb 2019 15:16:40 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/6-ways-hot-tubs-can-improve-your-health
Owning a hot tub provides more benefits than simply having your very own private place to relax and unwind. A hot tub is an investment in the mental and physical health of your family and friends—and you. We’ve laid out the greatest benefits a hot tub provides according to the physical and mental health advantages you will enjoy. Check it out:

Physical Health Benefits of Hot Tubs

Pain Relief
There are many hot tub benefits that involve improving your physical health, but perhaps the greatest is that of pain relief. Whether you’ve had a long day in the office, the fitness center, or just a long day in general, a long soak in your own hot tub can do wonders for relieving muscle and joint pain.

Heat therapy is an incredibly effective way to alleviate pain and discomfort caused by overworked muscles, strained posture, and a wide range of conditions that negatively affect the joints, such as arthritis.

Athletic Recovery
Proper recovery is a crucial component of any successful fitness regime, whether that entails a daily run, time on the bike, or a routine gym session. If you neglect to give your body the nourishment and care it needs to recover, you can seriously slow down your progress or risk an injury.

Soaking in a hot tub or even exercising in one promotes the optimal flow of blood and oxygen circulation throughout the body, allowing for a faster, healthier recovery for those with an active lifestyle.

Weight Loss
Did you know that owning a hot tub can aid in achieving your weight loss goals? By combining a number of physical and mental health benefits, frequent hot tub sessions can help you lose more weight faster by reducing feelings of being overwhelmed, improving athletic performance, and more.

Mental Health Benefits of a Hot Tub

Better Sleep
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average adult needs anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep every night for optimal physical and mental performance throughout the day. A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information suggests that a soak in warm or hot water at the end of the day will help you to fall asleep faster and get a better night’s rest.

Stress Relief
Feeling stressed? You’re not alone! Statistics show that eight in ten Americans suffer from stress, the variants of which can range from mild to debilitating. Unfortunately, this opens the door to a number of behavioral health problems and consequential physical health conditions. By slipping into a nice, hot jacuzzi, you can reduce your stress levels.

Reduce Anxiety
Just like stress, anxiety can range from mild to severe, and can very well lead to poor sleeping habits, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and an overall decreased sense of wellbeing. Create a secluded sanctuary in your own backyard and equip it with a steaming, private hot tub to lower your anxiety and live a happier life.

Enjoy Hot Tub Benefits

Yes, purchasing a hot tub can be a bit of an investment, but you can make the purchase affordable by knowing when to buy and what hot tub financing options are available. Invest in yourself today and reap these hot tub benefits by having a hot tub installed in your home or backyard.

<![CDATA[Are you buying a hot tub from a dealer…or the electric company?]]>Sun, 13 Jan 2019 16:36:31 GMThttps://poolandpatiocenter.com/our-blog/are-you-buying-a-hot-tub-from-a-dealeror-the-electric-company
When it comes to hot tubs and the internet, there is a tremendous amount of information and disinformation: facts and fake news; unbiased reviews and sponsored reviews. We’ll try and break things down for you to help you make not only a better-informed decision, but also a decision that saves you money.

Since more and more hot tub manufacturers have been cutting costs and quality by moving their factories down into Mexico or even overseas, much cheaper components and building strategies have been implemented. This has led to increased consumer alerts about quality and longevity. There’s something to be said of the quality control and check-and-balance systems when something is proudly Made in the USA.

Everyone should be aware that there is no such thing as 50% off, 80% off, or “if you buy today, we’ll take $10,000 off!” claims. A hot tub sold for $3,000 is not worth $12,0000, it is worth $3000. Hot tubs in this price range are constructed using lower grade, unprotected wood materials that will not hold shape for as many years as higher quality resin and steel structure hot tubs. Their insulation can be sub-par, partial…or even non-existent! Would you build a house in New England and not insulate it? What do you think is stronger – sub-standard wood such as 1”x2” framing (not even 2x4’s!), or the steel frame structure of a skyscraper?

Foreign manufacturers will even attempt to reduce costs by cutting corners with insulation materials. With our cold New England winters, you need to make sure the hot tub you are purchasing is fully insulated. Proper insulation ensures that the plumbing is protected from freezing temperatures and that your wallet is protected from expensive energy bills. An improperly insulated hot tub paired with an inefficient and inexpensive electronic system can cost up to FOUR TIMES more to run each month than a higher quality hot tub which was proudly Made in the USA.

Another telltale sign of a cheaply built hot tub is the electronic control system. Electronics imported from overseas or made by proprietary manufacturers can be very expensive to repair, have questionable reliability, and be very difficult to get parts for…if you even can find a source for them. Many import hot tubs use a “one and done” approach to their controls, where you are forced to overhaul the entire control system if something as small as a cheap switch breaks.

What is the quality of the insulation? Most importantly, don’t believe the claims in brochures and posters that your tub in New England will cost $8-12 per month, read the fine print for those claims.
Most are with a 68 degree outside temperature, the jets on high speed for 30 minutes a week with the cover closed! It doesn’t take long for a cheap hot tub that costs $120-150 per month to operate to offset and become more expensive than a higher quality tub costing $30-50 per month to operate. Operating a hot tub in New England without the proper insulation would be like leaving your windows open in the winter!

Ultimately, do your research as to not only where the hot tub and its components come from, but also how well the manufacturer assembles it and who represents, services and stands behind the hot tub. There are plenty of manufacturers that travel the country weekend to weekend promoting expos and also manufacturers that come to your home to “cut out the middle man”. These brands usually do this because they don’t have a local dealer to represent and support them, which can lead to headaches for you and your family in the event you need help. Finally, remember Mom’s advice, if it sounds too good to be true…
